Finding The Right DJ for You

The first step in finding the right DJ for your wedding is to know why you need a DJ.

In many cases, the terms DJ and Emcee are used interchangeably. There is a difference, but let’s assume that by “DJ” you mean someone who will play music and make all the announcements. In this age of rapidly changing technology and the DIY approach to all things creative, this is a very important thing to leave to the professional.

The IPOD DJ – many of us have seen or heard terrible stories of how a wedding was ruined by not having a true DJ. Someone thought if they put all their favorite music on an IPOD, people would dance, and the wedding would be complete. A family member or friend would be in charge of pressing play and that would be it. Never mind that there wouldn’t be anyone to welcome your guests, announce you and your husband for your first dance, guide your family and friends through the toasts, cake cutting, and other special events. The IPOD can’t create the emotion and memories that a good DJ can.

OK, I need a DJ – now what? Recognizing that a good DJ will make your wedding unforgettable, make it a priority. Your guests will remember your wedding for how much fun they had or didn’t have based on the entertainment. A reputable, professional DJ will cost $1000 – $2000 or more for 4 hours of performance time. Most companies do not charge for setup or breakdown of equipment and do not take breaks during your event.

Look for a company that is licensed and fully insured, belongs to industry associations and has a good reputation with ample referrals. Ask around, people are happy to pass on the name of a great DJ they used or saw at an event. Check with your other vendors and see what they know about the company you are considering. Look for reviews online and don’t be afraid to shop around.

Many of the top DJ companies are similar in a lot of ways. They have been doing weddings for many years and have worked at all the same venues. The equipment they use is professional grade and many are using the “newest” gadgets. Focus on the personality of the performer and if you think they are a fit for your style. You can tell if they genuinely care about you and your fiancé, or if they are just trying to close a sale.

Ultimately, you will book with the person that you are most comfortable with and will give you the day of your dreams. Budget is always a concern, but don’t sell your memories short by booking the cheapest DJ you find – you will regret it, and that is far worse than spending a bit more for the right person.
